Award Winning Rewind® Edition Chair: Sustainable, Circular Design in Action

When we first began experimenting with recycling used event carpet, we weren’t thinking about awards.
We were thinking about potential, the untold stories hidden in materials that most people overlook.

At Future Makers, we’ve always believed that plastic is not the villain; it’s what we do with it that matters.

So when MJ’s Event Services Ltd approached us with their recyclable Rewind® carpet, we saw an exciting opportunity. Together, we set out to prove that circular design, innovative engineering and sustainable manufacturing could create something truly remarkable.

Turning Rewind® Carpet Into Circular Furniture

Months of collaboration, hands-on experimentation and creative problem solving followed, guided by a simple question:

What if the end of an event wasn’t the end of the material’s story?

The result is the Rewind® Edition Chair, a fully circular, award-winning piece of sustainable furniture made from post-event polypropylene carpet. With limited domestic recycling options currently available for this type of material, most UK event carpet is traditionally exported for processing. By recovering, granulating and thermoforming the Rewind® carpet here in our Nottingham studio, we demonstrated that these materials can stay in the UK and be transformed into something built to last.

A Breakthrough Step Toward Full Circularity

Thanks to Blu Sky Technical Services Ltd, the carpet can now be pelletised, unlocking a fully circular lifecycle and paving the way for future recycled furniture projects.

Recognition for Innovation: David Williams Award 2025

When the British Plastics Federation (BPF) and The Worshipful Company of Horners awarded the project the David Williams Award 2025 for social contribution and innovation in plastics, it was such a thrilling moment for everyone involved. A true celebration of circular economy design and sustainable innovation!

This recognition is about reimagining value, rethinking waste and showing what’s possible when creativity meets purpose.

A Collective Achievement in Circular Design

We’re incredibly proud of our Future Makers team and grateful to all who supported this journey, from MJ’s Event Services Ltd and Blu Sky Technical Services Ltd, to designer Tom Hughes, 2HD Architecture Workshop and the growing community who believe in circular design as a force for good.

We hope this project inspires others to look at their own materials differently. The next great sustainable design story might already be sitting in plain sight.
