Pioneering Placemaking

Recently we had the pleasure of catching up with Nate Coltrane, Founder and Director of MIMM (Music Is My Motive) and Nottingham Street Food Club. Since December 2021, Nate’s been the driving force behind the vibrant events program at Future Makers. Join us as we explore the highlights and challenges of activating spaces and building community engagement, reflecting on the impact of events held at Future Makers.

Role and Motivation

Nate’s role involved curating and managing a diverse range of events that not only entertained but also developed a sense of creativity and community. Inspired by the vision of Tristan, Founder and Director of Future Makers, Nate recognised the opportunities for a vast, versatile space like Future Makers in Nottingham and wanted to contribute to its growth and prominence in the city.

Memorable Moments

Reflecting on the most memorable events, Nate recalls the International Women’s Day celebration and Midlands Melanin market, both drawing in over 300 attendees. These events showcased local talent whilst celebrating diversity and entrepreneurship. Collaborative events, like hosting England matches during the Men’s World Cup in partnership with Art of Football, emphasised the power of community engagement and shared experiences.

Event Diversity and Impact

From street food extravaganzas to underground music performances, Nate organised a wide range of events catering to a variety of interests and demographics. Collaborations with Notts Street Food, Melanin Market and Concrete Culture brought a unique blend of music, food, and community building. Professional opportunities, new event formats and innovation are amongst the lasting impacts on those involved.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Challenges faced with activating Future Makers as a venue include limited public transport links and a lack of existing amenities in the area. Despite this, Nate envisions improved infrastructure and enhanced outdoor spaces, to see Future Makers evolving into a premier destination for creativity and culture, with a focus on artistic, sustainable initiatives.

Participation in the Product Design Accelerator

Nate's journey took an exciting turn when he took part in Future Makers first education program aimed at developing sustainable initiatives, the Product Design Accelerator. During the course he gained valuable resources, mentoring and networking opportunities, to further his passion for sustainability. Equipped with newfound knowledge, Nate plans to make a significant impact in the sustainable design landscape, with future projects and products using his experiences and insights gained from the program.

Looking Ahead

Through creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to sustainability, Future Makers continues to redefine urban spaces and inspire future generations of change makers. Nate's contributions to the cultural landscape of Nottingham through placemaking, community-driven initiatives, and sustainable innovation have been invaluable. We wish him all the best for his next exciting chapter, and we look forward to future collaborations.
